Leave Durham City via South Road - past the University Science Site - [or take any road west out of Durham] and onto the A167(South) towards Darlington. At the Thinford Roundabout take the right turn towards Bishop Auckland on the A688. [Although it is slightly shorter to go via Spennymoor, it is easier to go on the Spennymoor By-pass].

Continue ahead on the A688 for 4 roundabouts towards Bishop Auckland and 350yds after the 4th roundabout you will come to a RIGHT turn signposted to Binchester/Newfield/Byers Green/Willington (just before a TOTAL Service Station). There is also a white/brown tourist sign to Binchester Roman Fort pointing to the right. Turn right here and you will find FIVE GABLES approximately 300yds from this junction on the left.
